178 cases of alzheimer's disease have been treated at Baek Sang clinic by applying constitutional medicine from January 1986 to August 1995.
The obtained results were as follows
1. The distribution of history was 21.9% (39 cases) within l year, 35.4% (63 cases)
from 1 to 3years, 27.5% (49cases) from 3to 5 years, and 15.2% (27cases) from 5 to 15 years.
2. The complications with other chronic disease were hypertension 50.6% (90cases) diabetes 10.1%（18cases) and Parkinson's disease 6.7% (12cases).
3. Age distribution.
There Were 2.2% ( 4 cases : 1 male , 3 females) in 40-49
year olds, 10.7% (19 cases : 5 males , 14 females) in 50-59
year olds, 29.2% (52 cases : 19 males , 33 females) in 60-69
year olds, 44.4% (79 cases : 28 males , 51 females) in 70-79
year olds, 12.4% (22 cases : 1 males , 21 females) in 80-89
year olds, and 1.1% (2cases : 2 females) in 90-99 year olds.
In total sex distribution, it was about 2.3 times more quent in females than males.
4. Constitutions of patients.
There were 72.3% (107 cases) for the Soyangin group, among which 28.1% (50 cases) was for a type of small intestine hyperfunctioned (ⅢR), 19.6% (29 cases) was for a type of heart hyperfunctioned (ⅣR), 12.8% (19 cases) was for a type of kidney hyperfunctioned (XA), 4.7% (7 cases) was for a type of pericardium hyperfunctioned (ⅣR), and 1.4%
(2 cases) was for a type of tripple warmer hyperfunctioned (ⅢR). There were 26.4% (39 cases) for the Taeumin group, in which 21.6% (32 cases) was for the type of liver hyperfunctioned (ⅡR), 2.7% (4 cases) was for the type of large intestine hyperfunctioned (ⅦA), 2.0% (3 cases) was for the type of gallbladder hyperfunctioned (ⅠR).
There were 0.7% (1 cases) for the Taeyangin group, which was for the type of gallbladder hyperfunctioned (ⅠA). It was 0.7% (1 cases) for the Soumin group, which was for a type of kidney hyperfunctioned (XR). 30 cases could not be diagnosed by Yom Tae Hwan's 24 constitutional pulse. Overall, Soyangin Was 72.3%, Taeumin 26.3%, Taeyangin 0.7%, and Soumin 0.7%
5. Ciassification of symptoms
Alzheimer's disease is characterize by the type of amnesia that includes not the loss of past memories but those of present ones (troubles of impressibility). Three main symptoms are aphasia apraxia and agnosia. In this udy apraxia was the most frequent, agnosia was second, and aphasia was the third. In aphasia loitering and wandering 96.1% (171 cases)
ourtrage with abuse and short tempers were 68.0% (121 cases) and insensibility of stool and urination was 51.7% (92 cases). In agnosia troubles with recognition of friends and family were 55.6% (99 cases). In other symptoms Insomnia was 58.9% (105 cases),
constipation 51.7% (92 cases) headache 50.6% (90 cases), overeating 44.4% (79 cases), and hypochondria was 38.2% (68 cases)
6. Methods of treatment
Constitutional acupuncture, herbal acupuncture and Constitutional herbal prescription were mainly used. Constitutional acupuncture and herbal acupuncture were partially used for the symptoms of apraxia, and herbal prescription were precribed to all of the patients.
For the Soyangin group (ⅢR, ⅣR, XR, ⅣR, ⅢR) Sipimijihwang-tang was mainly prescribed.
For the Taeumin group (IR, ⅡR, ⅦA), cheongsimyonjatan together with Hwang geum (Scutellariae Radix) 12g and Nokyong Cervus cornu) 4g, were mainly onescribed. Soumin and Taeyangin 1 case were only diagnosed and no treatment was done
7. Duration of treatment
For the duration of treatment there were 50.6% (90 cases) for 1 month, 34.8% (62 cases) for 1-3 months, 9.0% (16 cases) for 4-6 months, 1.7% (3 cases) for 7-9 months, 1.7% (3cases)
for 10-12 months, and 2.2% (4 cases) for 13-18 months.
